Food sovereignty and shopping local was the inspiring theme of Green Drinks in Whangārei on Tues 17th February.
Peter Bruce-Iri and Catherine Murupaenga-Ikenn from Climate Action Tai Tokerau presented their vision for repairing our food web in Tai Tokerau. For making it local, accessible, affordable, transparent, healthy and guided by mātauranga Māori.
Food security is the most important consideration for everyone everywhere, but particuarly vital in Tai Tokerau due to its geographical vulnerability in Aotearoa. We’ve all experienced severe weather events, power cuts and landslides cutting us off from the rest of the North Island. A network of local growers producing food that’s accessible to everyone would build resilience into our communities, nourishing good health and long-term environmental wellbeing.
It was a lively, interactive evening generating lots of questions and deep discussion which continued long after the presentation ended!
