Knitwear Visible Repair Workshop!
What a fabulous way to spend a Saturday afternoon in May
Whangārei He Awhi Rito Envirohub was the perfect setting for this wonderful workshop. Tutors Anne Fraser and Jenny Hill, who run Whangārei Intercept Fabric Rescue, (an Organisational member of Tai Tokerau Timebank), skilfully guided us through various sewing techniques and felting methods.
At Intercept Fabric Rescue they transform knitwear with holes and stains on them into wearable clothes of beauty.
Bringing with them a basket of knitted clothes, that were too much work for the fabric interceptors to repair, provided a great opportunity for the workshop to practice on. I’m particularly thrilled to have a 100% merino top that had 4 holes in it, and I repaired with needled felting! It has given the top a beautiful new lease of life and will keep me warm this winter! For free! 😊😊
Anne, a Timebank member, used her magical sewing skills to teach us how to needle-felt colourful fleece in various shapes over holes or stains; repair big holes with felt patches; embroider shapes over holes or stains; pull seams together using a ladder stitch; repair ‘ladders’ in wool garments amongst other embellishment techniques!
Several participants brought items they wanted to repair themselves, and using the coloured fleece, embroidery threads and felted shapes that Anne provided, they left with workshop with revitalised clothes all ready for the winter.
These techniques are simple to do and a must for anyone wanting to repair their favourite knitwear they can’t bear to throw away, but can’t wear because of the holes!
