What a difference a year makes

Viv Chris

In 2023 Cyclone Gabrielle caused significant damage in the Dargaville area to homes, gardens, and arable land.  Flooding, slips and damage from fallen trees was significant.  The regions kumara growers took a significant hit with both crops and land being affected.

The Catholic Caring Foundation funding for Flood relief distributed by Tiaki Taiao was welcomed by two local organisations.  New growth out of the flood debris (taitokerautimebank.org).

One of those organisations, Arapohue Retreat, a faith-based addiction centre on the outskirts of Dargaville, was able to rebuild the vegetable gardens and kumara beds washed away by flooding.  It was lovely to get some acknowledgement of our help in a recent newsletter.

The kumara beds planted Greenways Trust, recipient of this funding in Kaipara, are growing well and the residents of houses 3 and 4 are looking forward to sharing the bounty with the other Greenways houses when they are harvested in 3 months' time.

Due to the massive success of the first round of funding, Tiaki Taiao has been given a further larger grant for the same purpose, and Timebank Coordinators across the region are involved with identifying projects to use it on in conjunction with Tai Tokerau Timebank.
