This was one of the most social Green Drinks I’ve experienced, with everyone enjoying the warm, colourful atmosphere surrounded by exotic palms, orchids, bizarre cacti, succulents and fragrant subtropical plants.
The evening afforded “Green Drinkers” a wonderful opportunity to see behind scenes in the long tunnel houses, not open to the public, and guided by Florence who was happy to answer everyone’s questions.
The main conservatory is now over 56 years old and is home to a wonderful collection of tropical and subtropical plants, and the fernery houses one of New Zealand’s largest collections of native ferns.
With refreshments on hand everyone settled into a relaxed evening catching up with other Timebankers and it was hard to call “Time!” after an hour and a half! Luckily leaving the warm friendly atmosphere was made up for by Florence generously handing out little coffee plants to everyone as they left.
Botanica is open daily and is supplied with free electricity from the solar panels next door on the roof of He Awhi Rito.
The next Whangārei Green Drink is on Tues 19th May and will feature Textile Recycling by EcoSolutions.
