Tai Tokerau Timebank in Whangārei Green Drinks

Updated: Nov 2, 2023

Whangārei October Green Drinks was held at the Hundertwasser Art Centre in the Town Basin. A very beautiful space, kindly sponsored by the Centre.

It was a particularly entertaining evening, with a Recycling Week themed quiz, organised to coincide with Recycling Week. The Ecosolutions team provided everyone with refreshments.

Of the five teams competing, one was almost entirely a Timebank Team, The Re-Visionaries, and we came 2nd! (Four Timebank members and one who is joining.)

Ecosolutions put a lot of effort into researching 50 questions all themed around recycling in Aotearoa and more particularly Whangārei.

Everyone had their eyes opened to some depressing facts as well as some encouraging ones.

I learnt that our soft plastics get recycled into fence posts, vegetable gardens, parking bumpers, garden edging and ducting cable! The company, Future Post New Zealand, has developed a trademarked product that turns domestic and commercial soft plastic waste into premium fencing products that perform better, for longer. They are designed, re-purposed and made in New Zealand.

We discovered drop-off points for items such as household light bulbs (Mitre 10); batteries (Bunnings); e-waste (Noel Leeming); ink cartridges (Harvey Norman) and tetrapaks (Ngungurur Sports Centre).

Whangārei Green Drinks is run by Timebank Organisational member Ecosolutions and is always a great opportunity to connect up with other Timebank members as well as other like-minded people from the Whangārei area.
