Who knew it could be so easy and cost effective to create your own emergency compost toilet!? Thanks to Timebank member, Ken Spence, we learnt just how easy and quick to make it is.
In under two hours, everyone was equipped with the knowledge of how to create their own.
We had 9 attendees at the workshop at Anō Anō, Mend & Make at Kaitaia on Saturday afternoon (21st Sep). Most folk were wanting to learn about using it as an emergency system, but Ken could also explain the off-grid set-up as well. As a group, we shared ideas, discussed alternatives (like using it for pet poo), and chatted away getting to know each other better. Everyone expressed how grateful they were for the workshop and knowledge shared, feeling much more resilient.
We discussed that the Repair Cafe Kaitaia - Tiaki Taiao (last Saturday of every month at the Menz Shed), is a great place to get help with cutting the bucket if you don't have the tools at home.
Whether you're trying to save water, the sewage pipes are blocked, or the power is out, and flushing is not an option - an emergency compost toilet is a must! Once made, it can be stored away safely in the garage until the need arrives.
If you missed the workshop, don't worry-Ken is able to run a repeat workshop so keep an eye out on Timebank newsletters!
