Whangārei August Green Drinks

August Green Drinks was hosted by Whangārei Whakaora Kai Food Rescue. It was a very enlightening evening! Daniela, who heads it up, explained how they rescue food in Northland destined for land fill and distribute it to those in need. They do this by partnering with growers, suppliers and retailers across Tai Tokerau, collecting surplus food and giving it to more than 80 organisations that share it with their communities.

Every year they distribute about 188 tons of food, 43 of which would have ended up in landfill. They operate under the guidance and guardianship of their parent organisation, 155 Whare Āwhina. Their team operates from 3 sites - their main hub in Woods Road, Whangārei, and 2 satellite warehouses in Moerewa and Kaikohe. This vital mahi is made possible by many wonderful volunteers.

We were fortunate to go next door to Whare Kai a social supermarket operated with the support of Food Stuffs North Island . Shoppers receive points, based on the size of their household, and they can spend them on any items in the supermarket. The points replace money and everything in the supermarket has points allocated. Whānau in need of kai can select what they need in preference to receiving pre-filled food parcels.

Our evening refreshments were all from ‘rescued food’ ! The soup was absolutely delicious! There was also cheese & crackers, chocolate, chippies, cookies, fruit and fresh bread!

The evening was well attended and several Timebank members enjoyed connecting up with old friends as well as meeting new ones!

September Green Drinks will be an Environmental Quiz night on 17th Sept at Hundertwasser Art Centre. Last year’s quiz was heaps of fun, so I really urge you to book early to secure your place / team.
