He Awhi Rito, Whangārei Environment Hub is Open!

On Tuesday 5th December He Awhi Rito was officially opened with a wonderful party! Mana Whenua have given it their blessing as well as the name and a dedicated karakia.

Whangārei District Council has leased the newly repurposed building to local charity For Our Real Clean Environment ("FORCE") who are best known for their community clean-up events and the Whangarei Repair Cafe. Alongside the FORCE charity, He Awhi Rito opens with tenant organisations EcoSolutions; a CBEC enterprise., Tai Tokerau Timebank and Whitebait Connection- Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust.

He Awhi Rito joins a network of similar organisations throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. Both here and overseas there are some great examples of where Environment hubs have brought people together enhancing community collaboration. When they share a space and other resources they often find ways to help each other out.

Local Timebank co-ordinator, Janey Pares Edney, plans to be working there on Tuesdays, so will be available to Timebank members as well as the wider community.
